Once your dog can sit, you can use dog treats to train them to stay. Start by getting them to sit, then put your hand out in front of you with the palm facing forward as you say ‘stay’.
Wait a couple of seconds, then reward your dog with a treat.
Now, repeat the ‘sit’ command, take a step back and repeat the ‘stay’ command. After three seconds, step forward again, rewarding and praising the dog.
Repeat the process, gradually increasing the distance you step back, rewarding every time your dog stays.
But don’t go for too long. You’ll find you will get better results with frequent 5 to 10 minute sessions over a month.
