What are Healthy Weights for Different Cat Breeds and Sizes?

Indoor cats, outdoor cats, large cats and small cats all have different daily energy requirements. It's important to manage your cat's diet to ensure a healthy weight range is maintained. But to do that you first need to know your cat's ideal weight. In this article we look at five of Australia’s favourite cat breeds.

Persian cats have a gentle nature and blend easily into most households. Creatures of habit, they prefer a calm atmosphere and gentle handling. The ideal weight ranges for adult male and female Persians are:

  • Male: 5-7 kg
  • Female: 3-5 kg.

A long, luxuriant coat, with a dense undercoat, is the hallmark of the Persian cat. Persians can benefit from a diet that is enriched with Omega 3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA) and Omega 6 fatty acids to help support their skin’s “barrier” role. In addition, Persian’s will benefit from a diet that has a combination of specific fibres to help limit hairball formation.

Maine Coon

While Maine Coons are highly people-oriented, they are not overly dependent. Relaxed and easygoing, they generally get along well with children and dogs, as well as other cats. The ideal weight ranges for adult male and female Maine Coons are:

  • Male: 6-10 kg
  • Female: 4-7 kg.

Maine Coons can benefit from a diet enriched with taurine, EPA and DHA that help maintain a healthy heart. A combination of specific amino acids, vitamins and fatty acids contribute to good skin and coat health.

Ragdolls are calm and contented with a loving, quiet and very laid-back disposition. They are very social and like to be with their humans or their guests. Ragdolls are known for their tolerant attitudes with other animals and are especially good with children. The ideal weight ranges for adult male and female Ragdolls are:

  • Male: 5-9 kg
  • Female: 4-6 kg.

These cats can benefit from a diet that includes a combination of Omega 3 fatty acids and Omega 6 fatty acids to help maintain their skin and coat health.

British Shorthair

The British Shorthair is a friendly and affectionate breed, enjoying attention in an undemanding manner. These loyal and devoted companions are not ‘lap cats’ but do want to be where you are, snuggling up beside you on the sofa. The ideal weight ranges for adult male and female the British Shorthair are:

  • Male: 6-9 kg
  • Female: 4-6 kg.

With a plush short coat, impressive muscle mass and a sturdy physique, the British Shorthair needs a diet that helps support their hardworking joints and bones, maintains muscle mass and is enriched with nutrients for a healthy heart.

The Siamese is loyal, social, and wonderful with children and other pets. They also thrive on attention. Indeed, they demand it. It has been said that it is better to have two - so that they can entertain each other while their owners are away. The ideal weight ranges for adult male and female Siamese are:

  • Male: 4-7 kg
  • Female: 3-5 kg.

Siamese cats can benefit from a diet that includes an increased level of very high quality proteins and a moderate fat level to help preserve their slender and muscular body shape.
