Dogs come in different shapes and sizes and to keep them healthy and active it’s important to know the ideal weight of your dog’s breed to help manage their daily energy needs. In this article we look at the ideal weight of five of Australia’s favourite dog breeds.

German Shepherd

German Shepherds are solidly built, medium-sized dogs, slightly longer than they are tall, strong, muscular and lean. First bred in 1889, the German Shepherd was originally based on herding dog varieties from central and southern Germany. The ideal weight ranges for adult male and female German Shepherds are:

  • Male: 30–40 kg
  • Female: 22–32 kg.

German Shepherds tend to have sensitive stomachs so it’s important to feed them a diet that promotes digestive health.

Labrador Retriever

Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds in Australia. Labrador Retrievers are good–tempered, very agile and active, with an excellent nose, and a passion for water. The ideal weight ranges for adult male and female Labrador Retrievers are:

  • Male: 29–36 kg
  • Female: 25–32 kg.

These loyal, easygoing dogs make wonderfully adaptable companions. Intelligent with a strong need to please, they are naturally friendly and lacking in any aggression.  Labradors are also voracious eaters, so feeding them a calorie-controlled diet that is high in fibre can help keep your pet in a healthy weight range.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are sporting, affectionate and absolutely fearless. Their cheerful, friendly nature, lacking any aggression, has made these dogs very popular. The ideal weight ranges for adult male and female Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are:

  • Male: 5.9–8.2 kg
  • Female: 5.9–8.2 kg.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can benefit from a diet that contains nutrients necessary to help support good cardiac function including EPA & DHA, taurine, L-carnitine and antioxidants.

Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers have all the qualities needed to justify their popularity: friendly and affectionate, their gentleness explains their success as a family dog, which shows no sign of waning. The ideal weight ranges for adult male and female Golden Retrievers are:

  • Male: 29-34 kg
  • Female: 27-32 kg.

Golden Retrievers are loved and trusted family dogs, but they are also versatile working dogs - serving in search and rescue, and as guide dogs. Golden Retrievers can benefit from a calorie-controlled diet that also helps maintain skin and coat health.

Beagles are cheerful dogs - even-tempered, intelligent and amiable animals that are easy to live with. The ideal weight ranges for adult male and female Beagles are:

  • Male: 10–11 kg
  • Female: 9–10 kg.

If you own a Beagle, you’ll need to be mindful of your pet’s energy needs as they are another breed genetically predisposed to gaining weight. A calorie-controlled diet with a high-fibre content can help keep your Beagle healthy and feeling satisfied.
