Getting to know your Cocker Spaniel

The Cocker Spaniel is a beloved family pet with a docile temperament.

Although this breed usually flourishes in the company of others, they tend to have gentle personalities and can become nervous at times. Best known for their lustrous coat and floppy ears, they also have a tendency to develop skin issues and ear infections. This is why ROYAL CANIN® Cocker Spaniel food has been specially designed to look after their health with a targeted formula.

Temperament

Cocker Spaniels have a charming temperament and are typically happiest when spending time with their family. They are excellent companions for children and their friendly nature means they also get on well with other animals. The breed was initially bred as a sporting dog so tends to love a bit of activity, however you’ll most likely find them cuddling up on the couch by the end of the day.

Weight

The hearty appetite of the Cocker Spaniel means they can at times overeat. Attention should be paid to how much they are fed, as they are prone to gaining excess weight.

Muscles & Joints

Active dogs like Cocker Spaniels respond well to a reasonable amount of daily exercise thanks to their background as retrievers. They also have quite muscular hind legs so regular exercise helps keep these working at their best.

Skin & Coat

A Cocker Spaniel has a thick, wavy coat that will stay much healthier if it is brushed daily to keep their hair free of tangles and mats. It's also a good idea to comb the excess hair from around their ears. This keeps air circulating nicely around the ear and helps reduce the potential for ear infections.
