GETTING TO KNOW YOUR DACHSHUND

Dachshunds are famous for their long and low appearance, gaining the nickname “sausage dog”.

The Dachshund breed is highly intelligent but early socialisation is vital to ensure they do well in the company of others. They are generally quite wary of strangers and become closely attached to their family members. Because they are active dogs, but have small legs, their joints and bones get quite a work out. This is why their diet should include added support for joint and bone health.

Temperament

The Dachshund is highly intelligent but can be difficult to train due to their independent nature. The Dachshund breed is lively and fearless; they were initially bred for hunting so are usually incredibly loyal and well attuned to their owners.

Weight

Dachshunds are tiny dogs but can become overweight and lethargic if their diet isn’t monitored. They are prone to disc disease.  Overweight Dachshunds can develop severe back problems with the excess strain, so be sure to keep a watchful eye on their food and treat intake.

Muscles & Joints

Dachshunds are very muscular, despite their small structure. Their short legs are strong but can come under strain if they gain excess weight. Due to their short stature, Dachshunds should avoid jumping on and off objects to avoid back and joint injury.

Skin & Coat

Depending on the breed, Dachshunds have many different coats. Smooth Dachshunds have a short and shiny coat, whilst Wirehaired Dachshunds have a coarse, thick topcoat with a softer undercoat. Longhaired Dachshunds have a flowing, wavy coat with this type requiring the most grooming attention.

WHAT TO FEED YOUR DACHSHUND

From junior to adult

Dachshunds are active dogs and have small legs, meaning their joints and bones get a work out every day. They also have a tendency to become overweight. That’s why ROYAL CANIN® has designed a diet specific to their needs.

During their growth period, the Dachshund’s digestive system remains immature and continues developing gradually over several weeks. The exclusive combination of nutrients in our Mini Junior diet helps support the young dog’s digestive health and contributes to good stool quality. Highly digestible proteins with an adapted fibre content including psyllium and prebiotics promote a balance in the intestinal flora.

Natural Defences

Helps support the puppy’s natural defences, thanks particularly to a patented antioxidant complex and prebiotics.

Intense energy content

Meets the high energy needs of small breed puppies during the growth period, and satisfies fussy appetites.

Dental health

Helps reduce tartar formation thanks to the chelation agents in calcium.

BECAUSE DACHSHUND HAVE A LONG MUZZLE

The ROYAL CANIN® Dachshund kibble has been specifically designed for the Dachshund’s long muzzle. The kibble’s unique texture and shape make it easier for them to pick up their food and encourages proper chewing habits.

ADULT

Over 10 months old

Joint and Bone Support

Dachshunds’ little legs have to be strong and always on the go. Chondroitin and glucosamine are key ingredients of this diet to help promote healthy bones and joints. An adapted content of calcium and phosphorus helps support the Dachshund’s short limbs and vertebrae that are subject to severe mechanical stresses.

Ideal Weight

To maintain an ideal weight, ROYAL CANIN® Dachshund food contains a dual combination of L-carnitine and a controlled calorie content. This helps your dachshund increase the ability to burn fat.

Odour Reduction

To help keep your home and garden clean and fresh, our food contains targeted nutrients which help reduce the volume and odour of your pet’s stools.
