GETTING TO KNOW YOUR German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is a loyal, noble breed and is one of the most recognised in the world.

They are usually strong and highly intelligent; combined with their willingness to learn, this makes them ideal for rescue work and personal protection. However, they have a digestive system that is more sensitive than most other dogs and can be prone to gastrointestinal issues. That is why our German Shepherd diet has been specifically enriched with special proteins that are highly digestible.

Temperament

German Shepherds are loyal, self-assured and courageous. They require a lot of attention from their owners and in doing so form close bonds with them. German Shepherd Dogs are an intelligent breed that enjoys mental stimulation and should be well socialised from an early age. As highly intelligent dogs with an active lifestyle, German Shepherds can make excellent guard dogs.

Weight

The German Shepherd is a large breed dog that weighs approximately 36kg in adulthood. Effort should be made to ensure they are getting the nutrients they require, whilst maintaining an ideal weight for their age and gender.

Muscles & Joints

The German Shepherd is incredibly muscular, with a powerful, substantial build. Due to their large and muscular build, German Shepherds are prone to bone and joint issues, most commonly seen in this breed is hip dysplasia.

Skin & Coat

The German Shepherd has a short-medium coat. Their undercoat is short and dense and the top coat is longer and straight. Common colours include black with tan, grey, light brown or gold markings.

German Shepherds can also be white, blue or liver in colouring but these are fairly rare and are not considered the breed standard. The German Shepherd is considered to be more sensitive to skin allergies, particularly to things in their environment. Brushing to remove any dead or loose hairs daily is recommended.
