Getting to know your Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu were initially bred solely for companionship and are an affectionate housedog that thrives on being close to their owners.

Coming from regal beginnings, the Shih Tzu has a friendly nature that reveals the purpose for which they were bred: giving love and attention to those around them. The Shih Tzu has a beautiful, long and silky coat that needs a little extra nutritional support to keep looking it's best so they can shine from the inside out.

Temperament

The Shih Tzu is an incredibly affectionate breed that is typically eager to please. They are one of the original dogs bred for companionship and enjoy the comfort of their owner’s laps. While they are friendly to all who come into contact with them, they are highly independent animals when they want to be.

Weight

The Shih Tzu is a small, but sturdy dog and usually weighs between 4 – 8kgs depending on age and gender. They aren’t prone to weight gain, however their small size means their meal portions should be kept limited.

Muscles & Joints

This breed is moderately active and is best suited as an inside pet. As a lapdog, it’s important your Shih Tzu still gets exercised regularly to make sure their muscles and joints get a solid workout.

Skin & Coat

Best known for their flowing, silky coat, daily brushing is an absolute must for the Shih Tzu. The health of their skin and coat will be a reflection of what they eat, so it’s also important they are fed a diet that supports their skin and nourishes their coat.
